No student should have to learn on an empty stomach.
School Meals for Australia is working to develop practical, nutritious and sustainable school meal programs for Australian students to be provided by the Australian Federal Government and state governments.
The Problem
Hunger should never stand between a student and their education.
Students learn best when they are safe, supported and well nourished. Yet 1 in 3 Australian households experienced food insecurity in the past year, leaving many children without reliable access to nutritious meals.
School Meals for Australia is working with schools, communities, food providers and governments to create sustainable, dignified school meal programs that ensure every student is ready to learn.
Because no child should have to learn on an empty stomach.
What we are building?
-
We aim to develop simple and nutritious meal options informed by qualified professionals and appropriate food-safety standards.
-
Programs will be designed with schools rather than imposed upon them. Each participating school will help determine the most appropriate model for its students.
-
The proposed pilot programs will be evaluated before any broader expansion. Results, costs, challenges and outcomes will be reported transparently.

A Message From our Founder
School Meals for Australia began with a simple belief: a student’s ability to learn should never depend on whether food is available at home.
Our ambition is significant, but our approach will be careful. We intend to begin with a small, properly governed pilot and learn directly from students, schools and professionals.
This initiative will only succeed through collaboration. We welcome the involvement of school leaders, families, community organisations, researchers, businesses and governments that share our belief in supporting every student’s opportunity to learn.
